Cherthala : Coircity
Kerala is synonymous with coir. Cherthala is known as Coircity.
Cherthala is a well known place in Kerala. It was here that the famous Vayalar revolt(1946), an epic struggle took place. Coir is the major source of income for the people of Cherthala. Coir workers in Kerala's backwaters have to deal with all the uncertainties of the unorganised sector - irregular employment and insufficient wages included. Yet they stand out in their awareness of their rights, something that they have acquired through their association with the Coir Workers' Centre.
KK Chellappan, the State Committe Member of the Coir Workers' Centre is from Cherthala. Suseela Gopalan, Anathalavattom Anandan and KK Chellappan were present when the Centre was established. Most of the 400,000 workers in the coir industry are organised under the Coir Workers' Centre.
Eastern part of Cherthala is a very beautiful. Thaneermukkom is the nodal center for the back water Tourism. KTDC Thaneermukkom is providing the Hotel facilities for the tourists. |
